John Hay
First Lines
A sentinel angel sitting high in glory
And of unconquered Pelayo! land of the Cid Campeador!
I sent my love two roses, -- one
I stood on the top of Pitz Languard,
I strove, like Israel, with my youth,
If Heaven would hear my prayer,
In the dewy depths of the graveyard
In the dim chamber whence but yesterday
King Saloman looked from his donjon bars,
My dear wife sits beside the fire
My short and happy day is done,
Not done, but near its ending,
On the bluff of the Little Big-Horn,
Sad is the thought of sunniest days
She lived shut in by flowers and trees
The beauty of the northern dawns,
The knightly legend of thy shield betrays
The skies are blue above my head,
The winter wind is raving fierce and shrill
