Human Weakness

By Walter M. Lindsay

As men toil up the mountain side,
The weary day,
And from the top behold the sky,
Yet far away;
So holiest men, from youth to age,
Make pilgrimage!

We may depart the valleys deep,
And high ascend;
But yet around us is the earth,
Until the end.
Ourselves, alas! we cannot raise
Above our days!
